Blessings vs Curses

Blessings Verses Curses

Pastor Kathy Poon (Shimu)

Everyone wants to have blessings and no one wants the curses. But as we live in a world full of battles between the good and evil, it’s hard to avoid the non-stopping challenges from Satan, who wants to draw our attention away from God.  However, the good news is, as Christians, God already showed us the ways to receive blessings. We just need to make the right choices.

TWO KINDS OF WISDOM

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:13-17)

From this verse, we come to know that there are two kinds of wisdom, one is from heaven and one is from hell. Shimu shared with us some indications of things we may have from the heavenly wisdom or from hell:

  • Pure vs Unspiritual
  • Peace-loving vs Quarrels
  • Considerate / Submissive vs Careless / Controlling
  • Full of Mercy vs Harsh / Critical
  • Good Fruit vs Bad Fruit
  • Impartial vs Stereotype
  • Sincere vs Fake / Deceit

These all seen familiar and most of us are aware of these heavenly or earthly qualities in our own or other people’s lives. But the most challenging part is not to identify them, but to choose the heavenly wisdom instead of the earthly one. Shimu shared that there are two kinds of struggles that everyone would have in everyday lives.

TWO KINDS OF STRUGGLE

“We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do; I do not do, but what I hate I do. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.” (Romans 7:14-23)

As we can see from the verse above, there are two kinds of struggle, like a waging war in our lives between:

  • Law of God vs Law of Sin
  • God’s Will vs My Will
  • Good vs Evil

Like what Apostle Paul said, by our own might we can never win this batter, but on the other hand, the solution is very simple, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25)

Jesus can deliver us, and Shimu has given us three simple ways to let Jesus come and help us:

  1. Make right choices“Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God” (James 4:4)
  2. Humble yourself and submit to God”God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:6-7)
  3. Draw closer to God“Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)

TWO KINDS OF OUTCOME

Our choices determine our fruits and what we will become. Slowly it will be apparent if we are doing the right things or not. Shimu shared with us two outcomes, which are stated in the book of Deuteronomy:

  • Life and Prosperity
  • Death and Destruction

“See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, and to keep His commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” (Deuteronomy 11:26-29)

So make your choices today!
