Fishers of Men

Sunday, 16 March 2014

Rev Daniel Poon

This week, Rev Daniel shared with us one of the stories of Jesus in Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV). “As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.”

Everyone must have faced times when things were not happening according to the ways we expected. Just like Peter and Andrew, they went out for the whole day but caught nothing. But God’s plan is always bigger and better than ours. Rev Daniel highlighted four important words in here: COME, FOLLOW, MAKE, and LEFT.

  • COME – Jesus is giving us a direction, a goal, the way to go
  • FOLLOW – Our respond to Jesus’ calling is to follow this direction
  • MAKE – When we started to follow, God will do the work to provide all we need along the way
  • LEFT – In order to complete God’s purpose for us, we need to let go of the things in this world and let God handle everything

It is never easy to just let go of everything we have, as humans always want to hold onto something, to make us feel secure. But our God is a powerful God, and what He can offer will be more than what we can imagine. Let us strive to follow Jesus’ calling and stand firm to hold onto God only, as it says in Romans 15:13 (NIV), “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
