Rev. Daniel Poon

In the very beginning, God created Adam, and we all know that He gave Adam a family with Eve. God treasures the family, and today Rev. Daniel did not only mention about the family we all have with mum, dad and children, but also our spiritual family – our church. We need a Christian family, to keep us strong in faith, and we are able to have a loving Christian family, because God loves us first.

God is the Father and we are His children – as Christians, we call our God the Heavenly Father, therefore we are His children and He is the head of our church.

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”” (Romans 8:14-15)

Jesus is the Bridegroom, we are the Bride – Jesus is the bridegroom and as a church, we are married to Jesus and we belong to Him.

“The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.” (John 3:29)

Jesus also is our Elder Brother – Jesus is also the first-born Son of God, therefore He’s also our elder brother, who protects this family.

“Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.” (Hebrews 2:11)

Church is God’s Household – God lives in the church and He’s always there, therefore as the children of God, church is our home.

“If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:15)

When we come to church, which is the house of God, we will feel the love and joy that come from the Spirit of God. We are to know that we come to church not because of the ‘facility’ or ‘programme’, but because of God’s love. So how can we keep on having this love and continue to come to church? In a happy family, communication is very important. Therefore we should always listen to what our Abba Father says to us, and give our most inner thoughts to Him. Do not be afraid to come and talk to God. Often the devil may try to trick us and keep us away from God but we should know that as the children of God, we have the authority to rebuke devil and the ability to stop negative thoughts coming into our mind.

Today, in the Christian family, our mission is to learn to be a part of it. Every church is unique, but it’s God’s Will that we are in this particular church with the family God has given to us. It says in Romans 12:10 that, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” So let us all live in God’s love and love one another, together, build up the happy family in Christ!
