Section One V1-4 Commit in the Truth
Do we have the love and trust for God? When we have too much of our own thinking and perspectives, we will fail to see the love of God, and we will fail to see that the rod and staff of God, our Shepherd, are to guide us, not to hurt us. When we don’t want to stay in the house of God and the house of authority anymore, we must think if we still have the love and trust in our heart. If we want to run away from the family of God, we must go back to the first love and examine our lives. How is our relationship with God and how is our relationship with our authority?
V1 ‘Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.’ At the beginning of Hebrews 2, it talks about the truth and the love of God. It’s easy for people to see the ‘doing’ of the angels, instead of seeing the love of God. Do we see the church as a family? When we see the children, we also must see the parents. A son without the Father is an orphan; what do we see in a church? Do we see the people that are doing a lot of things, like Martha? Or do we not do anything and just sit there and wait for everything to be done for them? People cannot see the love of the Father, but the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. We must not be drifted away by this world and by our ‘doing’ mode.
God is love, and His Son is sent to save us. Can we feel this love? Because if we don’t, then we will have to stop doing what we are doing right now. Because without the love of God, we are unable to do anything. What is our attitude when we read the Word of God? How much time do we spend on reading and meditating on the Word of God? We don’t need to understand everything written in the Bible, because only by the Holy Spirit then we can understand what God wants to reveal to us.
V2-3 ‘For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.’ Do not see the messengers as God; all the messengers were sent by God, and we should not focus on the messengers, but on God and on Jesus Christ. In a church, it is easy for the coworkers and elders to lose their focus. When they see themselves more than they should, they may go astray and lead people astray. We must humble ourselves, to see ourselves as servants, the ones being sent, not because of our ability or talents, but because of the love of God. Let us live under the fragrance of the Tree of Life, to humble and obey; to deny ourselves and benefit others.
V4 ‘God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?’ Do not be obsessed with the miracles and wonders, but to see the Son of God, Christ Jesus Himself, behind all these miracles. What is our motive behind asking for miracles, prophecies, and supernatural experiences? Jesus did not want us to glorify ourselves in all these things, instead, He wanted us to disciple the nation. The most important thing is how many disciples we can bring for God! Because without love, and without carrying out the Great Commission in Matthew 28, then there is no use despite of how many miracles we perform. When we are willing to act out love, then these miracles and wonders will naturally follow us. Therefore the truth is that God loves us and sends His only Son as a living sacrifice for our sins, and we can only become true sons when we are committed in this truth.
Section Two V5-9 Humbly Receive the Crown
V5-7 ‘For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying: What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You take care of him? You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of Your hands.’ Angels were not created to manage the world, because when God created the Heaven and Earth, He gave this job of managing the world to Adam. Angel is the spirit of servant, as David wrote in Psalm 8. When we receive salvation, the angels will serve us and work for us.
V8-9 ‘You have put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.’ We have lost the ability to manage because of sin, and this authority has been taken away by the devil. Jesus was above the angels, but He was willing to be sent to the world and become human, who are a little lower than angels. Because Jesus suffered death, so He has overcome and taken back the authority from the devil. Are we also willing to be humble like Jesus? We know we have the royal identities as the princes and princesses, but only when we humble ourselves, become a true son like Jesus, then we can receive the crown of honour and glory. He did not put this crown on Himself, but the crown will put on Him.
Section Three V10-18 Be Made Perfect
V10 ‘For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.’ When Jesus humbly came to this world, He was here to lead many sons into His glory. He was willing to surrender, to offer Himself, and to be made perfect through suffering. Jesus did not blame anyone in this world for the sufferings He went through, it was natural for Him to release the love in the fragrance of the Tree of Life. Do we also feel loved when we serve? Or do we feel we are suffering?
V14-15 ‘Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.’ Maybe we are not afraid of death, but are we afraid of being poor? May God help us not to be afraid of death or not being taken care of. When we have fear for the future, we will have a gap in our lives for the devil to come in. God will release us, not to be the slaves of this world. He leads us and guides us, so we are not afraid, but to be in His presence.
V17-18 ‘Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.’ God is love, He is the merciful and faithful High Priest. When we follow God, no matter if we go through mountains or valleys, are we willing to believe God is love?
