Rev Daniel Xi An Poon
What is our love for God? A lot of time, we love people out of responsibility, not because we really love them, but we feel responsible and obligated to them, therefore we love. Is our love for God the same? We are the true sons and daughters, God loves us wholeheartedly, and we must respond to our Abba Father with true love. The core values for us to be Christians are to love and to trust.
Section One V1-6 Must Meditate
V1-2 ‘Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.’ When we call ourselves the true sons, then we must take part in the calling. We need to know our identities as the ones being called, this is not by accident, but according to God’s plan to be chosen and to be called. We are the ones being called, and we are made holy when we chose to respond. This is the holy identity we must carry when we enter the calling, to always meditate on God’s Word and to think about what pleases God.
When did the love of God for us started? At the beginning of the world, when He created the Heaven and earth, through His creations, He expressed His love for us. How do we interpret the love of God for us? Only during the time, when we are baptised? Or when we saw a miracle? Or when everything goes according to what er pray for? God’s love is always there, despite of good days or bad days. Stop being a consumer, who stops loving God when the desired is not received.
God never stops loving us; when Adam and Eve sinned, God clothed them and covered their shame. The Book of Genesis is the beginning of the love story. God created men in six days, and He loved us unconditionally. A mother has to be pregnant for 10 months in order for the parents to prepare themselves and to learn to love their child. God loved us since the very beginning, but how much do we love God? We may love God at the beginning, we were willing to give up everything for God, we followed God wholeheartedly, but when time goes by, we are stuck in our ‘doing’ attitude, we want to perform miracles like Jesus, we want to heal like Jesus, we want to rule and reign with Jesus… but these are all about ‘doing’.
V3-4 ‘For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honour than the house. For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.’ It’s easy for our love to grow cold when we feel we are not appreciated, because our love has conditions, we expect God and the world to appreciate the things we have done, but we fail to see that it’s never about how much we can do! Jesus came to the world not to prove Himself, because He knew the Father loves Him no matter what! Churches nowadays have lost their focus, they go around pleasing people and make people feel good, and when people are not happy with their church, they move to another church, or they build their own church.
V5-6 ‘And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.’ Moses knew he was only a servant; we should not see the servant more than the master. Do not let people look up to us more than look up to God. We know we are servants like Moses, do not expect for anything in return, because we can serve only by the grace of God. Our love will easily grow cold if we fall into the temptation of receiving praises from people. God wants us to love wisely, not to stumble others or ourselves.
Moses was a servant and Christ is the Son, who manages the household. Can we tell the difference? Do not see the servant more than the authority, and do not let people see us more than they see our authority. Do not have an expectation for people to praise us or to give us anything in return, because we are not doing a favour for anyone by giving and offering to the House of God; this is what we should do as the Body of Christ!
Section Two V7-15 Must Listen
V7-9 ’Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness, where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My works forty years.’ Everything the Israelites did were to Moses, they were angry at Moses, and they complained to Moses, but God said that everything they did to Moses was doing to Him. Are we also stiff-necked like the Israelites? Not knowing the works of God and not seeing God’s guidance?
V10-11 ‘Therefore I was angry with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, and they have not known My ways.’ So, I swore in My wrath, they shall not enter My rest.’’ We should long be in God’s rest, not to always seeing what we are lacking or what we should be doing, but to seek the Spirit of God and to enter His true rest.
V12-13 ‘Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.’ When we see our fellow brothers and sisters fell, when we see they backslide, we should hold our hands out for them, to let them see the love of God and the love of the authority. We should help one another, be strong and courageous, use the Word of God to support our brothers and sisters. If we don’t know what to do, then pray that God will give us words to speak, to encourage and to build up.
Section Three V16-19 Must Believe
V16-17 ‘For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?’ These Israelites from Egypt did not believe and did not listen after Moses talked to them. 40 years they were in the wilderness and could not enter the presence of God.
V18-19 ‘And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.’ God talked to Moses directly, and the people received the Word of God through Moses, so when the people didn’t believe in Moses, they didn’t believe in God. Let us believe that God loves us from the beginning, let us hear and believe. Do not be stiff-necked and do not wait until it’s too late.
