Hebrews 5 – The Priest According to God

Rev Daniel Xi An Poon

Section One V1-3 Belonged to the Earth

We must be alert in the environment, which is ever-changing, do not be afraid, but through it, receive the revelations from God. We are the ones being called and following God, do not conform to this world, but to influence the world. We are not little people, God has chosen us therefore do not look down on ourselves. We have a new life, a resurrected life, so when our old-self comes out to lure us, we must reject it with faith. Have faith and know that in Christ we are new creations and we will not be bound by the same problems. V1 ‘For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.’

V2 ‘He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.’ We are often trapped by our own weaknesses, we give ourselves excuses and we hold onto our past. We only want to hear comforting words from others. We do not seek the Word of God and continue to feel sorry for ourselves. As the priests of God, we must speak out the truth, understand the truth, and to know that only the truth can set us free.

Section Two V4-11 Belonged to Heaven

V4 ‘And no man takes this honour to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.’ No one can say that they are the High Priest because the High Priest was appointed by God. Aaron was called by God, he only listened to God, until the time when Moses was on Mt Sinai, and the people were inpatient, they asked Aaron to build a golden calf for them to worship, then when Aaron listened to the people, he failed.

V5 ‘So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ A godly priest would not listen to the people, but only God. God will not give up on the godly priest, who He chose. We must know our identity, know who we are, and why we are called. There are a lot of lies in this world, but can we pray like Jesus, for God’s Will to be done instead of our will?

V8 ‘Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.’ Jesus came to the world not by the identity as a priest, but by the identity as the Son. What is our life like when we are chosen to be the priests of the New Testament? Do we list to people or God? V9-10 ‘And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.’  We must know that being chosen is God’s Will, it’s never about what people say.

Ephesians 3:9 says, ‘And to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ.’ The Will of God is for us to understand what has been hidden in God’s creation. When we become the priests, God wants us to understand the mystery of His creation and He wants us to lead people to understand it. As priest, we need to know that we can overcome our difficulty and our troubles in life, because we can do all things through Christ, who has strengthened us. A heavenly priest will not give in to the earthly desires, but to strive to follow the Will of God.

Jesus came to save us, God is not here to condemn us, His Will is for us to know who we really are as His chosen priests.

Section Three V12-14 To Grow Up

V12 ‘For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.’ God is love and God brings hope. He trusts us and He loves us, despite of our rebellious and disobedience. Every lesson we receive in the morning devotion is building us up and making us teachers like Jesus. But do we believe in it and receive it by faith?

V13 ‘For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.’ We become infants, who cannot eat solid food; we only stay in the stage of relying on God’s grace and mercy, but not the teaching of God. In Matthew 24:45, it says, ‘Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season?’ People like to hear what pleases them, to eat what they chose to eat; but as the servants of God, we are managing the house of God, and giving food in due season. God’s Word is our daily bread, our Rhema, which needs to be distributed to the people in the house of God.

V14 ‘But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.’ God gave us feet, for us to stand up, to walk, to run… it’s ok to fall but are we willing to stand up again? We are not infants anymore, we must have love and trust in God, to learn to walk, to stop standing in the same place, to take steps forward… eventually the door will close on us, if we don’t respond then God will call someone else. It’s our choice.

Romans 12:2 says, ‘And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.’ Jesus says our thoughts and attitude must change, God is talking to each one of us, He is training us and renewing us, so we can differentiate the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. We can experience God, if we are willing to be a godly priest, not an earthly priest.
