Section One V1-4 Listen to the Teaching of David

Solomon was anointed the king after his father David. David knew he was old so he appointed Solomon king as God instructed. David taught Solomon a very important lesson when he was about to leave the world: dying is a path everyone must take, but we don’t need to be afraid. David told Solomon to be strong, don’t rely on people but on God, and to prove himself man by carrying out the laws of the Lord.

The world wants us to rely on ourselves, so we’ll have fear and we’ll have no peace. But if we rely on God, then we will prosper wherever we go. David’s life influenced Solomon, his life experience became wisdom for his son. David laid out life and death in front of Solomon, who was about to be the king. God did not talk to Solomon directly but Solomon knew what his father said was from God and he followed carefully and wisely.

Section Two V5-12 Receive the Instructions of David

After we listen to the teaching from God do we receive it as our own and apply it in our lives? David knew Joab was wicked, but he didn’t deal with him straight away. On the other hand, David also remembered the kindness of the sons of Barzillai. So when David was old, he told Solomon who were the foes and who were the friends. David gave teachings and commands to Solomon, even though Solomon was already the king. David put God in the centre of his life, he knew God gave him Solomon as his son, so he will be responsible to his life until the end.

Section Three V13-46 Keep the Commands of David

Adonijah knew God was on Solomon’s side, he knew Solomon had the favours of God and men, but he was still acting foolishly. Adonijah didn’t put God in the centre of his life, he followed his flesh desires and went to Bathsheba to ask for Abishag. Bathsheba also didn’t realise this was a serious matter so she went to Solomon. But Solomon knew Adonijah’s intention, it was just like Absalom, when he took over the throne he went near to David’s concubines. Now Adonijah had the same wicked intention, he wanted people to know that he could have the woman of his father.

Solomon knew the evil schemes of people because his father David already told him. He also knew Abiathar the priest had his own fields. Levites should not have their own land but Abiathar did and Solomon knew what he did.

Joab heard about all the things Solomon did so he ran away. A person without God in their lives will be afraid. Solomon was not afraid, he let God be the judge. When Joab hid in the tabernacle of the Lord, Solomon told Benaiah to strike him down so all the innocent blood Joab shed would have nothing to do with David and his sons. Solomon lifted up God and his father David, not himself.

Solomon was waiting for the right timing to act. He knew it was God, who made him the king, so he was not afraid. He dealt with the army leader and the priest wisely, according to the teaching, instructions and command of David. He waited for God’s right timing to appoint his own followers as leaders. Even though Solomon was already the king and David already died, but he still waiting for the God to judge.

When Solomon was faithful and put God at the centre of his life, then God established his kingdom. When we listen to the teaching and receive the commands, do we rally carry it out? God wants us to live out the life of blessings, but we must put Him in our centre.
