Section One V1-5 To Act with own Understanding

Before Solomon became king, the Bible didn’t record anywhere when God talked to Solomon directly. Everything Solomon received was told by his father David. Solomon was observing and he saw many things. Solomon saw how Egypt was a strong nation during that time, he also saw how there were no walls around the land to stop the enemy coming in. But he was waiting for his timing. When he finally had the opportunity, he married the daughter of Pharaoh and built relationship with Egypt.

When Israelites entered the Promised Land God already told them not to marry outside Israel. But Solomon used his own understanding to act and married the daughter of Pharaoh. Furthermore he built his own palace, and built walls around to secure the land. Solomon used his earthly understanding to make decisions, it seemed like the right thing to do. But in verse 2 it says there was no house built for the Lord, so people sacrificed in the high places. Solomon didn’t realise that the reason David did not build a temple for God is because God didn’t let him. Solomon still offered sacrifices to God, but he didn’t know God looked at his heart more than his offering.

A lot of times when we act with our own understanding, we thought we are doing the right things, but we didn’t see God’s Will behind all the things happened around us.

Section Two V6-15 To Humble and Receive God’s Blessings

God gave Solomon an opportunity to seek Him. When we don’t hear God speaking to us, He is actually testing us and waiting for us to connect. When we don’t hear from God or from our authority, we must connect first, ask questions, and always seek God’s Will. God gave Solomon this opportunity to ask and to connect.

When Solomon had the opportunity to talk to God, he gave all the credits to his father David. Solomon was humble and even in his dream, he lifted up his authority, not himself. He was willing to be like a child in front of God. But at the same time, Solomon had a lot of burdens, carrying the responsibilities as the king. Therefore he asked for wisdom, for judging the people of God. He had been relying on his own understanding, so God gave Solomon the opportunity to seek Him. When the opportunity came, Solomon asked for wisdom.

Solomon had a simple heart, he didn’t ask for wealth or power, but wisdom to rule the kingdom. Not only God gave him wisdom but also understanding from God. This understanding is about how God looks at people. We need this godly understanding to look at others, not our own understanding.

God also taught Solomon to learn from David. To seek God humbly and to offer to God wholeheartedly. Solomon received it and started to make offerings to God “before the ark of the covenant of the LORD” instead of those high places.

Section Three V16-28 To Receive Glory through Wisdom

When the two women came to Solomon to fight for a child, Solomon didn’t look down on them because they were harlots. Solomon was not the same anymore. He looked at things from God’s perspective. God looks at people from the heart, and Solomon used his wisdom to reveal the true heart of people. When God gave us wisdom, we must treasure this and don’t take it for granted. When we are willing to let go of our earthly gains, come to God with a simple heart, then God will show His glory, His love and blessings for us.

We must come before God with a simple heart. He loves us and He knows we don’t have wisdom. But we are willing to come before Him and He remembers our simple heart. May God forgive us for using our own strength and understanding to do things, instead of listening to Him and to our authority. Let God help us to be like Solomon, to change our ways when we heard from Him!
