I Samuel 14 A Nation Without It’s Calling

God always sees our weaknesses and His hand is reaching out to us and bringing us back to His Kingdom. God is giving us a way out, and He is reviving us in this special Easter season. God has already sent His Son to save us so we must turn back and see God’s love with us!

Section One: V1-5 A Wrong Start

In I Samuel 13:15, Samuel left Saul. Because Saul was trying to copy Samuel but he didn’t really seek God and honour God. We tend to learn things on the surface. We see things our authority does and want to copy them but we do not see the life of our authority and the God behind our authority.

It’s easy to follow what our leaders do or wear, but then we follow men instead of God. If we do not see the God behind the authority, then when they make mistake we will backslide. As a follower we need a spiritual alertness from God, and follow our authority according to God’s will.

Saul relied on himself, he did not repent when Samuel left him. He also relied his own army, instead of treasuring the 330,000 men God prepared for him. His 3000 men only saw Saul, they didn’t see God.

Jonathan was in the army of Israelites but he did not follow the orders of his father. He should not be wilful to leave the group without informing his father.

Saul even called Eli’s grandson to wear the ephod and be his priest. Saul just wanted something that make him feel secure. God has already rejected the house of Eli, but for Saul he only wanted what he wanted. There is no God in his life, he acted in his wilfulness  and walked in the flesh. His son was the same.

Jonathan thought if his father didn’t take an action then he would. It was a wrong start from the leader and bring the wrong action of the followers.

Section Two: V6-30 Being Wilful

Jonathan decided to go by himself and the armour bearer followed him. It sounded like he feared God and wanted to do something for God. But the truth is he did not seek God, he sought the opinion of the armour bearer.

Later in the Bible we also see Jonathan wanting to give his throne to David. God has given the position to Jonathan’s family but he didn’t treasure it.

Jonathan did not follow and seek God, he used his own will and testing God. He even used his own life as a gamble. Do we really focus on what God has given to us?

Jonathan also acted against his father when he ate the honey on the ground. When the people told him about Saul’s vows, Jonathan even spoke against his father. Jonathan did not respect his authority and honour his father.

When Saul realised it was his son and his armour bearer, who did not listen, he wanted to kill them. But the people spoke out to save Jonathan so Saul listened. Saul’s reaction was also selfish because he was only concerned about himself and how his followers saw him. He feared the people who he could see instead of the invisible God.

Section Three: V31-35 Follow the Flesh Desire

Flesh desire is doing whatever we want. Saul set up the altar by himself and offered to God. This was the first time he built an altar for God, after two years as the king.

When Saul first became king, he didn’t give thanks when he received what he wanted, he forgot about God and forgot about Samuel, who anointed him. He only saw himself.

Section Four: V36-46 Disregard God in their Eyes

Offering is not anyone’s job but the priests’. Saul tried to copy Samuel, he wanted to be the high priest and the judge. Often we would do what we think is good and respond in the ways we like, but we do not set our eyes on God.

The priest spoke up about seeking God first. But God did not answer because from the beginning they didn’t seek God. Why did the priest speak up now? He should have spoken beforehand.

God called Saul not just to be the king but also to fight against the Philistines and set Israelites free, but Saul left the Will of God. He only thought for himself. The Bible didn’t say if Saul came close to God or not but it says he gave up on fighting the Philistines.

Section Five: V47-52 Walk in Own Schedule

Saul tried to grab everything with his own strength. Let us not following our own schedule but God’s schedule. When we no longer have the commitment for our position, a wrong start will lead us to destruction. Then God’s anointing will be passed on to someone else. Let us only focus on God.

*Pursuit and Responding Prayer:

Lord, help us to lay down ourselves to be convicted of sin, or righteousness and of judgement, help us to have a self-control heart and not be led by our flesh desires. Teach us to follow our leader and our authority. So we can walk in Your way all our life. Amen.
