What are the things that stop us from experiencing God and walking in God’s Will?

Section One V1-7: Rely on Relationships

When we face troubles, quite often the first thing we would think about is to rely on the relationship we have with others. We can see there is a soul tie between David and Jonathan, he was even willing to die for David. When there is a soul tie, people would do things more than they should.

Jonathan went and told Saul not to wrong his servant, David. This is not how anyone should talk to their authority, not only Saul was the king but also his father. Jonathan belittled Saul and lift up David, when David had not yet become the king. During pastoral caring, do we overprotect the people we look after? As a result we would stop the flow from the authority and from God to come down to them.

Jonathan did not honour Saul’s authority and identity as the king. We need to have the right attitude. Jonathan appeared to be godly but did he really rely on God? He did not really lift up David to God, but to himself. He tried to help David but he used his own way to help David to escape.

When we have our own plans in our mind, then where is God in our plans? Jonathan thought if David escaped then Saul would not kill him. And David relied on his relationship with Jonathan that he thought he would be safe.

In front of Jonathan, Saul swore by the LORD that he would not kill David, but did he keep his promise? We should not mention God’s name in vain.

Section Two V8-17: Walk the Old Way

David thought he could rely everything on Jonathan. So he continued his old way, how he fought the Philistines, and how he played music for Saul. David knew Saul wanted to kill him and he knew Saul was jealous of him. David wanted to be recognised, even though he was anointed by Samuel but his brothers looked down on him, therefore he lived with the orphan spirit.

David wanted to hold onto the worldly gains, a lot of time we also did not see God’s presence, we used our gifts and favours from God to walk in the old way and act against God’s Will, at the end we are not protected by God. Michal was the same with her brother Jonathan, helping David to run away and going against Saul.

Michal used and idol to pretend to be David. Why was there an idol in the house? Would David not know about this? When David fought Goliath, he proclaimed God’s his only help. But he had an idol inside his house. God uses environment to reveal the truth about our lives. David’s life was a mess, he spoke about God but he did not really know God. He tried to use His own strength for his own gains.

Why was Saul being attacked by the evil spirit? Why did Jonathan have the soul tie with David? Their household was worshipping idols and in order to receive recognition and power, David married into the family of idol-worshipping. We need to see God is a holy God and we need to be determined to get rid of all the idols in our lives!

Section Three V18-24: Return to God

David ran away to Samuel, who in the very beginning went to look for him, anointed him, and talked into his life. Samuel took David to Naioth, which means ‘dwelling place’, to hide. When David finally came to God, God did not solve his problems straight away, instead God hid David. We need to be humble and let go of all our strength and our ways, stay quiet and hide in God’s protection. No matter if it’s in the jail (of Joseph) or at the wildernesses (of Moses), as long as God’s presence is with us, it’s the best hiding place.

When Saul sent people to talk to Samuel, God showed Saul His sovereignty. God tried to tell Saul that he should stop, but Saul was overwhelmed by his own emotions and flesh desires. He did not care about God’s warning.

We need to see the problems in our lives, when we come before God boldly, lay down everything, be completely opened to God, then He will show us our wickedness and sinful nature. Do we really believe in God? We like to speak God’s Name but can we really come to God, hide under His wings, and be restored by Him?

*Prayer & Pursuit

Lord, Your Spirit is with us and talking to us, reveal to us how blind we are, how many idols we are hiding within us and living with. Today Lord, show us Your light, we’ve been relying on the world, help us to let go, not to rely on the relationships of the world, not to walk in our old way, but to hide in Your dwelling place.

Lord, Your Spirit will set us free. We are afraid of the people and the environment, like Saul, like David, like Jonathan and like Michal. Forgive us for living in our flesh desires. May Your Spirit heal us and give us peace, so that we will no longer be afraid. May Your blood cover us and release us, so we can return to You! Amen!
