I Samuel 23 – David Relied on God Truthfully When He was in Escape
We have left our comfort zone and walk on the path with God. In chapter 23 we see David also left his comfort place, he had no place to stay but he prayed in everything. In the cave of Adullam, it was a transitioning period for David.
Section One: V1-5 David in Keilah
We can see David’s life changed when he was willing to accept the priest of God. Previously David didn’t seek God, he was walking in his flesh, but from chapter 23, David started to seek God in Keilah. Keilah was an important place. David let God take over, he no longer relied on his judgement.
But the people following David were afraid. Not only they were being chased after by Saul but then also they needed to fight the Philistines. Instead of also being afraid, David came to God. When people followed Saul complained, Saul tried to use his own way to make the people happy; but David sought God again.
When Abiathar came to David, David used him. Saul killed all the priests of God, even Samuel left him. But when David received Abiathar, he sought God in everything. So Abiathar assisted David to seek God and we can see David’s life changed.
Section Two: V6-18 David in the Wilderness of Ziph
David saved the City of Keilah. It was a place of protection and livestock. David could’ve stayed in there so he would no longer need to travel around. But God allowed the environment to change David. If David stayed there then he would be stuck in there.
Where is our Keilah? The place of wealth and comfort, where the enemy will get to. Saul was about to attack Keilah but he didn’t because David left there. When we are in a comfort zone, a place with gates and bars, this will also be the place where the enemy can find us and a place that stops us to seek God.
David sought God, he knew he had the ability to fight, but he was willing to let go of all this and seek God. David’s army was growing, even after fighting battles, and these people were all willing to follow David out of the cave of Adullam and out of Keilah, the place of comfort. Are we also able to walk out of Keilah and not stay in the place of comfort? Let us rise up, not to be afraid of the wilderness.
In this place, David wrote Psalm 18, which says, “Lord You are my strength, I love You!” David praised God in the wilderness of Ziph. God will bless us, do not see our enemy chasing us but see God’s love upon us.
Jonathan came to see David but David was determined to follow God so he didn’t listen to what Jonathan said. He didn’t need Jonathan to be next to him. So Jonathan left and soon after he was killed. There are always people around us telling us about God, but we need to see their lives, do they really feel God and seek God? David had the discernment because he sought God in everything. David passed yet another test, unlike Saul, who rejected the position God gave him in the first place.
Section Three: V19-29 David in Sela Hammahlekoth
God prepared the best for us in heaven so we don’t need to hold onto the place we live in on this earth. Everywhere David went seemed dangerous. If we see this from the perspective of the world, then we will never have true rest. Do not be afraid of leaving a safe place but be afraid of leaving the presence of God.
Where is the place of the presence of God? No matter where we are, if God’s presence is always with us, and we will not be afraid.
*Prayer and Pursuit
Lord, may Your presence lead us, no matter if we are in the wilderness of Ziph or in Sela Hammahlekoth, help us to come out from our place of comfort in Keilah. What can’t we let go? That we are afraid of leaving? Open us Lord, take away our Keilah, so we can walk out, to the place where Your presence is. Thank You Lord, give us strength and faith so we can walk out of the darkness into the wonderful light. Amen!
