I Samuel 7 Who Can Stand Before the LORD?

Section One: V1-11 Repent and Return

The people at Beth Shemesh were unwilling to accept the Ark of the LORD because it struck down their people. So they sent the Ark of God to Kirjath Jearim, in the house of Abinadab. The name of Abinadab means ‘my Father’s Name is glorified’ and from this we can see Abinadab lead a life honouring his father and honouring God. The Ark of God could therefore stay in this house for more than 20 years. God did not strike them down and did not bring plagues upon them. Because they honoured God and followed God’s commandments. How about us? When God’s presence is with us, do we receive blessings, or do we experience what those Philistines or the people of Beth Shemesh did?

V3 in the Book of Judges we see the Israelites were wilful and not in unity, but now in I Samuel, it says, ‘all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord’. We need true repentance and turn back to Him completely. Only when we are willing to be convicted of sins, of righteousness and of judgment, then we can come before God. Our hearts, our souls and our spirits have to all return to God, and all the foreign gods needed to be destroyed. Ashtoreths is the god of war and the wife of Baal. We should only rely on Jehovah God to win the war and receive victory, nothing else!

The people worshipped Baal because they believed it helped them to receive harvest and to help their wives to have children. But only God can give us abundance and give us children. What do we rely on when we follow God? God wants us to completely destroy rely only on Him.

V5-6 Mizpah means watch tower. when the Israelites were willing to repent and return, then they were gathered in Mizpah to pray. When we are willing to get rid of the foreign gods, then we need to pray before God.

In Exodus 17:7, “So he called the name of the place Massah (“tempted”) and Meribah (“contended”), because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?””

During praying and fasting we need to examine into our lives, the Israelites were blind because they worshipped idols for too long. Samuel was helping them to know their sins because God’s presence is always with us, but it is our sin that hinders us from connecting with God. When we know our sins then we will return. Do we know our sins today? Or are we unwilling to face our sins and mistakes?

V8 When we decide to repent and return, the devil will try to attack us. The Philistines came to attack the Israelites, so they said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” Not only Samuel was a Prophet, but he was also a Priest, so he made an offering to God.

When we offer everything we have and seek God completely, the enemy will come to attack us and therefore we need to rely on God more and at the end our enemy will surely be defeated before us.

Section Two: V12-14 Fully Rely on God

Samuel set up the stone to remind the Israelites to get rid of the foreign gods and serve God only then His Hand of Mercy will be with us, may God help us not to forget this and use the right attitude to worship Him. When we have the right attitude, not only we will take back the land we lost but we will also win the battle, to receive complete victory. God can help us gain what our enemy has and become fishers of men!

Section Three: V15-17 Be Faithful and Stand Firm

Samuel did not finish here, but every year he went on a circuit to check and make sure the lives of people were still set apart for God. Here we see Samuel’s attitude for his work, as well as for his household. He also built an altar to God in his house. Do we build an altar for God in our house? Let us cry out to Him continually and serve Him wholeheartedly.

Who can stand before the Lord? Those who repent and return, those who fully rely on God and those who are faithful and stand firm to the end!

Pursuit & Respond

Oh Lord, Your presence is always here, You have never left us, but how can we experience Your power? Help us to see the blockage in our hearts that stop us to come before You, help us to repent and return to You, to fully rely on You, to be faithful and stand firm to the end! Lord forgive us for not seeing You are a victorious God, we did not fully rely on You and we tried to work in our own ways. We rely on this world and we rely on ourselves, we did not seek You when we face the battle.

LORD we want to fully rely on You, for You are the one true God Who provides and win the victory for us! Please forgive our sins and cleanse us, help us align with You, not only to reclaim our possession lost to the enemy but also become fishers of men! Help us boldly share testimony for You and help our church fish for people! Amen!
