I Thessalonians 5 – A Life Being Protected

Rev Daniel Xi An Poon
Section One V1-5 To Know Our Identity
Paul brought down peace and hope to the church of Thessalonica. Even though they were in confusion, in darkness, in distress, but Paul brought the message of peace to the church. Recently we have been facing terrible weather brought by the cyclone in New Zealand, the news given to us made us unsettled, but true peace is from God. With this peace, we are willing to come to the House of God and to light up His House early in the morning. Who can give us this peace and who can protect us? Only the God who gives peace.
V1-2 ‘But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.’ Do we know our true identity? When we do, then we will understand how the day of the Lord comes as a thief. We will know to be alert and prepared for the day of the Lord.
V3 ‘For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labour pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.’ We can never save ourselves with our own strength, do not think that we don’t need the presence of God. We always think there are more important things than praying and coming to the House of God. But we do not realise that the day of the Lord is coming, it will be a day when the wheat and the weeds are to be separated.
V4-5 ‘But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.’ Do we know that we don’t belong to the darkness? The darkness belongs to the world, but we don’t belong to the world. Therefore, do not be deceived by the world, which tells us to stay in depression, to stay in darkness, to stay in unforgiveness, to stay in self-pity, to stay in sickness… instead, cry out to God, be determined to stay out of darkness, because we are the children of light.
Section Two V6-11 To Be Watchful and Sober
V6-7 ‘Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.’ We must be watchful and sober, because it’s easy to run away from our problems and it’s easy to fall asleep, but we must strive to stay watchful and sober. We don’t want to face our problems, but when we seek God, He can solve all our problems for us.
V8 ‘But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.’ When we put on the breastplate of faith and love, then we don’t need to be afraid. Why do we stay in darkness? Because we don’t allow love and faith coming into our lives. We don’t believe God can do it, we don’t believe God loves us, we don’t believe the Words in the Bible… when we rely on our own emotions and our own strength, then we will continue to stay in the darkness and in sleepiness.
V9-10 ‘For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.’ We thought once we become believers, then we will not need to worry about anything else. But it already says in the Bible very clearly, every one will be judged by God at the end times, but God’s Will is for His people to be saved. When we stay watchful and sober, then we will be saved. The salvation of Jesus and the blood of Jesus is full of power. When we put on this armour then we will not easily fall.
V11 ‘Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.’ We need fellowship, when we are with the body of Christ, we can help each other, edify each other, build up each other, and to show the love of Jesus to each other.
Section Three V12-28 To Live in Love and Trust
V12-13 ‘And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labour among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.’ We must honour our leaders and recognise them. Can we see that all our authority did was to support us and not to harm us? Furthermore, we must love one another, do not try to fight for the love of the authority with each other, and do not be jealous of them.
V14-15 ‘Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.’ When we look down on others, then we cannot love one another. We must seek goodness, strive to do good, and don’t take other people’s kindness to us for granted.
V16-18 ‘Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.’ Paul reminded us to rejoice always, even when we cannot feel the joy, through the strength given to us by God, we will be able to rejoice always. Furthermore, we must continue to share the testimonies of what God has done in our lives. When we share, God will do it again and again, when we testify, we are also giving thanks and remembering all the wonderful things God has done for us in the past.
V19-22 ‘Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.’ God has always been talking to His people since the beginning, through prophets and His servants. But somehow people always ignore the teaching of the servants of God. What is our attitude when we hear the prophecies from God? Do we only want to hear what we want to hear? Or can we be watchful and alert of what we are hearing?
Let us live under the Tree of Life, to love and trust, and our lives can be protected.
