Section One V1-7 To Set Apart
V1-4 ‘Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Saviour, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’ Are we using our 24 hours to preach the Gospel? God created people to have a fellowship with Him, and repeatedly He is telling us that the end times are near. Because He did not want to destroy His beautiful creations like what He did in Noah’s time. When the wicked people refused to repent and return, God then had to wipe out the earth.
V5-7 ‘For this they wilfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.’ God wants us to set apart our time, our money, our lives… where is our focus? In this world that will fade away or in the eternity.
Section Two V8-13 To Hope for the New Heaven and Earth
V8-9 ‘But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.’ We need the Spirit of Truth to come inside us, for us to examine ourselves, have we really tried our best for God? Have we really followed God’s commandments?
V13 ‘Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.’ The new Heaven and Earth has God lives among it; it’s even better than the Garden of Creation, because God not only would visit it, but He will also dwell in it with us.
Section Three V14-18 Be Diligent be Steadfast
V14-16 ‘Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.’ Do we hear the small voices inside us to teach us and urge us to stop sinning? If we cannot hear the voices of truth, then we must examine ourselves. Jesus was willing to give all His life to God, He has left us with so many treasures, but what is our focus? There are still a lot of things we don’t understand, but when we are diligent and have the reverence for God, then the Holy Spirit will help us to understand.
V17-18 ‘You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.’ When we hear, do we act it out? We must grown in the Word of God, we have been taught so much truth, the teaching has been challenging us to get out of our comfort zone, and this is the truth, are we willing to listen and follow?
