Section One: V1-10 Face Temptation

Saul has been prosecuting David, chasing  him and wanting to kill him. But how did David respond to Saul’s death? David was killing the Amalekites, and when he returned he received the message that Saul was dead. There were two messages David received. First, his enemy was dead, second, the kingdom of Saul has passed.

There were many opportunities in the past for David to kill Saul but he didn’t because he knew Saul was not his enemy. Also David’s will was not to be the king of Israel, because if it was then he’ll be pleased to hear that Saul was dead.

The Amalekite wanted to please David by giving him this information, but this was not what David wanted. The Book of Proverbs also tells us not to rejoice when our enemy failed. We should never lose mercy and love, but we love them does not mean they can join our team. Saul never understood it, he allowed the Amalekites to live among his people.

David did not lose his judgement when he heard the news. He didn’t fall into the trap of the enemy, instead he mourned for Saul. The enemy wants us to stop loving each other, but David knew Saul was the king of Israel, he knew it was a test from the enemy. When people try to please us instead of pleasing God, we need to reject this and see what is the truth from God.

Section Two: V11-16 Deal with Temptation

David showed a good example to his team. He showed them that Saul was not his enemy. We should not enter into temptation, the Amalekites tried to please David but instead of celebrating Saul’s death, David showed his fear of the Lord. He knew Saul was God’s appointed king and it would dishonour God to come against Saul.

Section Three: V17-26 Live out the Truth

David made a song, to show his sadness of the news of Saul’s death. Can we act on what we think and feel? It’s easy to have the thought of honoring God and talk about it, but can we really carry it out? David showed by actions his sadness of Saul’s death. Let God help us to never lose the love for people.

Prayer and Pursuit

Lord, there are temptations in this world, help us to love others as ourselves, to see the enemy behind the people, who try to attack us. Open our spiritual eyes and see the works of the enemy, we want to know how to deal with the temptation with Your wisdom. Prepare us and protect us so we will not live in a sinful life. Bless us to be filled with love for You and for others. Amen.
