Section One: V1-5 David’s Darkness

In the previous chapter, we can see that David didn’t ask God when he went out to fight the Ammonites, and we can also see that in this chapter, David was sleeping in the afternoon while his army was fighting in the frontline. He no longer went out to fight with his people. We focus on our physical desires, such as food, clothing, lustful desires or other people’s recognition, instead of what we need to do.

David’s responsibilities were to be the king of Israel but he didn’t go stand and fight with them. Instead he had many wives and when he woke up in the evening and saw someone bathing he didn’t walk away. David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” The name Bathsheba means ‘covenant’, Eliam means ‘Relative to the Lord’, and Uriah means ‘Light of the Lord’.

But when David chose to walk in the darkness, Bathsheba also didn’t walk in her destiny to keep the covenant. Because she didn’t kill herself nor talk to her husband about it. Instead, she went to David when she became pregnant. Did David really love Bethesda? He slept with her then never saw her again until she sent people to tell him that she was pregnant. David only wanted to fulfil his lustful desires.

David walked in darkness, Bathsheba also walked in darkness, but God is the light and He never changes.

Section Two: V6-21 The Contrast between Light and Darkness

David called Uriah, talked to him about the battle and about Joab, then gave him food and sent him home. But Uriah was the light, just like what his name meant, he slept with his master’s servants. Uriah knew his master and his fellow solders were living in the field and in the midst of the battle, therefore he could not be the only one who was enjoying life.

God put Uriah next to David to remind him about his mistake, however, not only David didn’t listen, but he also called Uriah again and made him drunk. Uriah still didn’t go home, so David wrote a letter for him to take back to Joab. Uriah was a faithful servant, he held the letter that would kill him but he didn’t open it to read. Faithfully he delivered the letter to Joab and it costed his life. Joab was Uriah’s master, but he also waked in darkness, he must knew how faithful Uriah was but still killed Uriah.

Section Three: V22-27 God was Not Pleased

When Joab reported back, apart from Uriah’s death, he also mentioned some of David’s servants were killed. Joab was in darkness, he used this opportunity not only to kill Uriah but also some servants of David. Joab did not fully submit to David in the very beginning, and David’s wrong decision costed the lives of Uriah and his other servants. This is the contrast between light and darkness.

David thought his problem was solved but God was unpleasing about what David did. Also, David was not the only one who knew about it, Joab knew, Bathsheba knew, and when David took Bathsheba in, she must had been really pregnant therefore others would also know. David chose to walk to darkness and Bathsheba chose to not keep the covenant, people will change but God will never change.

Prayer & Pursuit

Lord, we see how Uriah was walking in the light, give us strength, help us not to fall into temptation. Teach us to be alert, to humble, to obey, to deny ourselves and to benefit others. Help us to live in Your light everyday. When we hear Your Word, strengthen our body, soul and mind, so we can be the children of light! Amen.
