Rev Daniel Xi An Poon
Section One: V1-24 Mind Battles of David and Joab
In this chapter, we learnt that David’s son, Absalom ran away. David missed his son but he didn’t go look for him. In fact, what happened to Absalom was very similar to what happened with David in the past. When Saul was chasing after David, he ran away. But even though David didn’t fight back, did he really surrender?
David was the youngest in the family and he was not valued and mistreated by his brothers. Deep inside him, he had an orphan spirit, he didn’t feel accepted and loved. We saw how David respected Saul, but was it out of love or out of fear? In fear, we’ll always be a slave, only in love we can be sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father, and only in love we can really humble and obey without fear.
But different to David, Absalom killed Amnon, who was the first in line to the throne. David didn’t kill Saul but somehow he also did not pass on his experience to his sons and he spoiled Absalom, who ended up killing his own brother. Maybe somewhere inside David, he understood how Absalom felt being mistreated and allowed Absalom to do as he pleased. Is this really the right thing to do?
Many parents try to allow their children do what they couldn’t do when they were young. But everyone has their own path to go, we should never expect our children to walk on the same path as us. Let God heal all our hurt and make us understand what is stopping us to pass on the blessings to our next generations.
Not only David was fighting a battle in his mind, Joab was also battling within himself. Everyone knew and could see David missed Absalom, but only David couldn’t. Therefore Joab decided to take this matter in his own hands. He thought he was helping David by copying what the prophet Nathan did, to tell David a story. But David knew what Joab was thinking. We should not copy from what others do because everyone will receive different revelations from God. What worked before might not work later.
Everyone has a battlefield in their mind. David was afraid of what the 12 tribes of Israel would say if he let Absalom come back, but he also didn’t want to kill his own son. So even though he called back Absalom, he still didn’t want to face this matter. Only God can give us true peace and help us to face our inner-self. He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us but we chose to comprise with the worldly sins and evil desires.
Section Two: V25-31 Mind Battles of Joab and Absalom
Did David really not know what his son was up to? He didn’t stand in his authority and he didn’t want to face conflict. It also happens in a lot of the families, where the husband and the father would run away and let their wives deal with issues I the families. But wives actually need their husbands to cover them and protect them, then they can become good helpers to their husbands.
David hurt Absalom twice, when Absalom ran away David did not go look for him, and when he called him back he also did not see him. Therefore finally Absalom fought back.
Absalom called to see Joab but Joab also tried to avoid him, so Absalom burnt Joab’s field. Absalom was not aught the truth and seemed to always react in a more aggressive way. Do we also teacher others the truth and stop them acting wrongly and repeatedly?
Absalom was prideful, after he burnt Joab’s field he didn’t apologize and admit his mistakes. Finally Absalom got to see David, but David also didn’t admit his mistake and his fear of being accused by the 12 tribes. He was dragging his time and waited until the matter passed.
David’s weakness resulted destruction of his family. We thought we are doing what we think is right to fulfil our desires but we actually walk into destructions. God wants us to have the fragrance of tree of life, to humble, to obey, to deny ourselves and to benefit others.
Prayer & Pursuit
Dear Lord, we know our hurt and our old-self are hindering us to move forward. We know we are unwilling to let go and all we see are the lacking of our lives. Thank You Lord for Your Word, which comfort us today and tell us that You are always there for us. Help us to block the lies of Satan and only open up to Your truth. Help us to stand firm and not to be afraid.
Bless us, Lord, Your presence with us, let our heart be strengthened and our spirit be fulfilled. In the waiting we can have peace and joy. Amen.
