II Samuel 2 – Focus in God’s Presence

Section One: V1-7 Walk in God’s Guidance

David and Saul were both anointed kings but Saul was chosen by men and David was chosen by God. When Saul died, David would not have to hide anymore. But there are more problems coming out.

A lot of time when we first come to church we bring a lot of problems to God, but when God solved our problems we tend to become distant from God because we think we don’t need God anymore.

But David was different. He was changed and was willing to seek God. He didn’t want to stay with the Philistines anymore. He didn’t want to hide anymore. David had a new eyesight, he connected with people to Jabesh Gilead and did not make them his enemy.

Section Two: V8-11 Do Not Walk in Men’s Support

Abner was not willing to admit that Saul’s kingdom has passed. He supported Saul’s son and thought he could still make him the king. Abner didn’t see God’s favours in David, but still want to use his own way to fight.

But if God is not with us, no matter where we go, even if we go to a place that has the presence of God in the past, we might still not see God. The most important thing is our lives today, not what happened in the past, whereas Abner and Ishbosheth did not want to face the fall of Israel.

On the other hand, David became king of Judah for seven years in Hebron. God was preparing him to become the king of Israel.

Section Three: V12-32 Do Not Walk in the Temptation

God does not want us to face temptation. How does the temptation come? Why would we face temptation? It’s also a time to test out lives. Things we think are right are not necessarily right in the kingdom of God. Abner and Joab both faced this temptation.

Joab followed David, and at the time David was humble, asking and seeking God in every decision, but Joab still walked in the flesh. In the same way, Abner also walked in the flesh, he was supported by men but without the guidance of God. They didn’t seek God, they didn’t seek the king, but only saw their own strength. Unlike David, both Joab and Abner wanted to prove their own strength.

Joab and his followers didn’t stay with David, they didn’t follow David’s flow, but they followed their own desires to fight, even though they won the battle, they lost a bother, Asahel.

David never wanted to fight with the army of Israel, he was fighting against the Amalekites and the Philistines, but Joab only wanted to make Judah become Israel. He thought he could do it by his strength. Joab is not any different to Abner, they walked in the flesh and did whatever they pleased.

If we don’t want people to chase after us, we aim for their arms and legs, not their hearts or heads. Abner was chased after by Asahel and he decided to kill Asahel. Jesus taught His disciples to humble and obey, to deny ourselves, not to do what we think is right. It’s easy for us to think that we are on the right track, but do we really walk in the vision of God? If our hearts are not right then we won’t be able to follow God’s flow.

Prayer & Pursuit

Lord, we want to learn to humble ourselves, to obey, to deny ourselves and to benefit others. You’ve raised us up and helped us, let us focus on You only, and not be distracted by other things around us. We want to follow Your flow wholeheartedly, and You will raise us up.

We come before You and admit that we are weak, we cannot focus and our eyes are distracted by the worldly matters. Help us oh Lord, to focus on the small portion You’ve given to us. Strengthen us to say no to the temptation, we only want to follow You and focus on You. Amen.
