Section One: V1-11 To Set Apart
David wanted to bring back the Ark of God, he used all the musical instruments and gathered all the people to worship and celebrate the return of the Ark. For David, he thought the more people the better to welcome the Ark of God, and he also tried his best to bring the best worship to welcome the Ark.
All these things David did he learnt from the Philistines. David’s life was full of idols, even when he was running away from Saul, his wife used a idol to pretend it was him to give David time to run away from Saul’s people. The idol saved David’s life in the past and therefore when he used the ways of the Philistines to welcome the Ark, he didn’t notice if there is anything wrong with it.
David was shocked when Uzzah died. Uzzah was a strong man, so when the Ark fell, the first thing he reacted to do is to secure the Ark. But is this really what God wants? Everything we do must be according to the way of God, every time when God asks us to make a move, He will bring the people, the resources and the environment to show us the way.
God was not pleased with the ways David and the people treated the Ark, therefore God struck down Uzzah. Then David realized his mistake, he wanted to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, but did he ask God? A lot of time, we thought we are serving God, but we are actually using our own ways to serve. We take God’s Presence for granted, and do not seek God. Do we deny ourselves, humble and obey? When we talk about the presence of God, He is serious about it. What David was doing was revealed in front all the people, and by brining the ways of the Philistines to seek the presence of God, David sinned against God.
Do we know if we have sinned against God? Serving God is simply to follow Him, not using our own ways but His ways. When God struck down Uzzah, David became afraid, because he did not walk in the way of God, and fear made him give up and leave the Ark. David left the Ark in Obed-Edom’s house, the Levi. When we decide to run away from the presence of God, we tend to draw a line from God and from those who serve God.
Therefore we should set apart ourselves from this world, do not use the ways of the world to serve God and please our own desires, everything we do must be according to God’s will instead of our own will.
Section Two: V12-15 Humble and Obey
David realized that when the Ark went to Obed-Edom, Obed-Edom’s household was blessed. Then David knew God’s heart, His mercy and grace. Therefore David changed his way, he used a joyful heart to bring the Ark to Jerusalem from the house of Obed-Edom.
David no longer sought his own way, he only wanted the blessings and the presence of God. Our attitude determines our altitude. and when David obeyed, the whole house of Israel was blessed. This time, it was not David trying to bring the presence of God, but it was the presence of God Himself entered Jerusalem. When we serve, do people see us or do they see God? Who do ourselves see when we serve? We like to do a lot of things for God, but is God really there?
Section Three: V16-23 Deny Ourselves, Benefit Others
David changed his way and did everything not for himself, but the people of Israel. David wanted all the people of Israel to be blessed by God, he gave offering to God and distributed the meat and the bread to the people. When David’s wife Michal saw this, she despised David, but David was not affected by his wife’s attitude because he knew everything he did was for God.
David went home and blessed his family, then Michal said disrespected words to David. Even though David loved Michal, he still spoke the truth to her instead of trying to please her or comfort her. David did not allow Michal to despise him as the servant of God. He was not boasting about himself, but stood in the right position and spoke for God.
At the end, God did not bless Michal with children, David loved Michal, but because she despised David, he no longer spent time with her. Do we learn from our mistake like David? To turn back from the world, to humble ourselves, to obey God’s commands, to deny ourselves and to benefit others.
Prayer & Pursuit
Lord, today we can be here to serve You is by Your Grace. This is Your dwelling place but where is Your presence? What is it that You really want? We see other people being blessed, and we want what others have! Help us to be willing to humble and obey, to deny ourselves and benefit others. We have so many things that we want to do, but are they pleasing to You? Come to burn away all the things in our lives that do not belong to You, we only want Your presence because only the place with Your presence is Your dwelling place.
Lord, we have so much rubbish of this world that we bring to You, but You enlightened us today that we should no longer live with these worldly things, give us direction so we know where we are going. We only want to please You and to be in Your presence. Thank You, Lord for Your Word and revelations. Amen.
V6 “牛失前蹄” – 意思是脚筋跳起来。“乌撒”的意思是强壮有力，所以当意外发生时他马上去“伸手扶住神的约柜”。但他出于“好心”做的事却不是神所要的。
