Section One V1-5 To Follow & To Endure 要遵守 要忍耐

Pau taught us an important message, how to finish well. A lot of times, when we stared something, we may be excited, we may have a lot of thoughts and plans, but as time goes by, we will lose the passion, and we will grow weary. It’s not by our strength that we can finish well, but we must walk with the grace of God. In Jesus Christ, then we can receive glory and we can also glorify out God.

V1-2 ‘Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.’ Paul reminded the people to follow his teaching and to endure until the end, do not doubt. When we have this faith to continue walk this path, then we can really carry out everything we are taught. In front of the church of Thessalonica, Paul declared the power of God, he did not see their failures, but he saw them as victors, he knew they could succeed and followed whatever they commanded.

V3-4 ‘But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you.’ People following us may shake our faith and our love for them, when they could not follow what we taught them, or when they did not listen to what we instructed them. Do not be affected by them, just like what Paul did, but to know that every word from Paul was from God and was for the benefit of the people following his teaching.

V5 ‘Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.’ Our hearts need to be right, not to fulfil our own worldly desires, but to endure to the end like what Jesus did.

Section Two V6-15 To Discern & To Do the Work of Christ in Quietness 要分别 要安静做主工

V6 ‘But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.’ Some people in the church of Thessalonica were not following the teaching of God and the instructions of the church, therefore Paul told them to stay away from those people. We must humble ourselves and know that by our own strength we cannot help anyone. If we are not their appointed authority, then we must learn to stay away from temptation. On the other hand, can we stay closer to our authority? So we are covered and protected, then we can pray for those, who have departed from the teaching of God.

V7-9 ‘For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; nor did we eat anyone’s bread free of charge, but worked with labour and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us.’ Do not try to be the firefighters, to put on the fire when we see it, but to preach the Good News, to do the work of the Lord, not to fulfil our own worldly desires.

V11-12 ‘For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.’ There are so many Christians like what Paul mentioned, people who worry about other people’s business, but not follow the teaching of the church. People who judge the church and judge their leaders, try to fix everything and sort everything out in their own ways. Are we also like this? God told us to work in quietness, to stay still, to wait for the Lord, to follow the teaching, and to be where God wants us to be. God has given us people around us for us to preach the Gospel to, our family, our friends, our co-workers… but are we living out a good testimony for God?

V13-15 ‘But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.’ They are our brothers and sisters, but when they chose the fruits of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, it will only bring them shame and death. We must walk with God, and to have this love for our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we stay quiet under the Tree of Life and do the work of God, then we can walk in the grace of God.

Section Three V16-18 To Be with the Lord 要与主同在

V16 ‘Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all.’ God’s peace will be with us, when we are willing to wait and to work in quietness. When we choose to be with the Lord and to stay in His presence, then the peace will be with us. Let go of everything worries us and scares. Let go of those we want to use our own strength to help. But to seek the presence of the Lord only.

V17-18 ‘The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is a sign in every epistle; so I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.’ Paul told his followers to really listen to him, to read his writing and to know his words. Do we know who we are listening to? Who is our Lord? Who is our authority? Let us stay in quietness, to work in quietness, let the grace of God come upon us in this path of faith. This is the generation of darkness, but the grace of God is sufficient for us.
