Isaiah 37 – How to Face Difficult Times

Tuesday, 7th June 2022

Rev Daniel Xi An Poon

Acts 1:7-8 says, ‘And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’ We are called, saved, filled by the Holy Spirit so we can fulfil the Great Commission God has given to us. We have a life purpose, and we will never feel lost, if we really live and bind this purpose.

Section One V1-7 Hear, Do Not Fear

V1 ‘And so it was, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.’ We hear a lot of voices every day, people may say negative things to us, discourage us, slander us, put us down… but we should not all these words and voices defeat us. Do not treat what we hear bigger than God. Hezekiah heard the words from the king of Assyria, he tore his robe off and put on sack cloth. Because he wanted God to know that he surrendered everything to God, to let the old self die and hide under the covering of God.

V2-3 ‘Then he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of trouble and rebuke and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.’ Not only Hezekiah did this, he also told his subordinates to do the same, so they would all humble themselves to God instead of trying to fight with their own ways, to plan with their own worldly knowledge. He was determined to seek God therefore he went to Isaiah, the prophet of God. The people of Judah knew God had been protecting them and guiding them. Therefore when they faced difficult times and when the enemy came, they realized they had sinned against God.

V4 ‘It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’ Ezekiel reminded God they were His people. Do not take it personally, but humble and lift it all to God

Section Two V8-20 See, Come Before God

Hezekiah did not respond, instead, he lifted up everything before God.

Section Three V21-38 Wait for God’s Hand

V30-32 ‘This shall be a sign to you: You shall eat this year such as grows of itself, and the second year what springs from the same; also in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and those who escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.’ God was responding to what Hezekiah had said before, that they were the remnant of the people of God. God encouraged them to rise up and to walk out, others will join them and come to their aid.

Do we really know who we are and where we stand? We must be more willing to humble ourselves and submit to God. Give Him everything we have and let He come to our aid.
