Section One V1-4 Walk in the Desires

V1 ‘Now Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.’ Samson is seeking to fulfil his own life’s desires, something that he is missing in his life. His father was absent in Samson’s life, and therefore he’s been searching for things in this world to fill his emptiness. When Samson fell in love with the Philistine woman, his parents did not stop him, instead they were helping him to marry the woman. Samson’s parents did not teach him the truth, why did Samson had darkness over him? Because his parents did not reveal the truth to him.

Samson had God’s favours and blessings, but when he was walking in the lustful and worldly desires and when his parents did not take the authority to guide his path back to God, then he continued to walk astray, which led to his death. God does not want us to draw a line with those who are not willing to listen to our teaching, but when God’s Word comes, can we stay committed to God’s vision? If we choose to continue walking in our desires, then we will become self-centered and walk further and further away from God.

Section Two V5-18 Walk in the Selfishness

V5 ‘So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him.’ Samson was more and more selfish, in order to get whatever he wanted, he would get rid of all the obstacles in front of him. He torn apart the lion just like how he torn apart a young goat. God wanted the people to offer the sheep and goat to Him at the time, but Samson did not set apart for God. He seemed to be very familiar with tearing apart animals. He tried to solve his own problems according to his own ways, and gradually he walked in the darkness.

V9 ‘He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.’ Samson thought the lion meat was good for his parents, but he did not realised that it’s unclean in God’s eyes. They sinned against God without even realising it. A lot of times we would do things to others because we thought it’s good for them. But often this is out of our selfish desires, not from God.

V11 ‘And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.’ They brought thirty people to Samson to help him in accordance with the customs of the Philistine wedding. But Samson was not grateful, he still tried to rely on his own strength.

V12-13 ‘Then Samson said to them, “Let me pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing. But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.”’ Samson gave them a riddle and wanted to receive something from them. Samson used the worldly ways to achieve his worldly desires, he wanted people to look up to him and to praise him. But he did not have the wisdom from God, and every decision he made out of his selfishness became snares to his life.

Samson was walking in his death. When the Philistines went to ask Samson’s wife-to-be the answer of Samson’s riddle, she also used the worldly way to get the answer, then Samson called her a heifer. Samson walked in his lustful desires, even for his beloved wife, when he did not get what he wanted, he rejected her and was disrespectful for her.

Section Three V19-20 Walk in Wilfulness

V19 ‘Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house.’ God’s Spirit was still with Samson, he knew that he had to keep his promise. There were still some decisions Samson made that were righteous in God’s eyes. But after he’d done something right, his selfish desires and wilfulness were greater and made him sin against God again.

V20 ‘And Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man.’ Samson acted out from his anger, he walked in his desires, his selfishness, and his wilfulness. At the end he even lost his wife. The darkness has covered the earth, we will be blinded from the truth. Why did Samson fall? It was not in one day, but because of his lifetime decisions. Let us follow God wholeheartedly, not just for one moment, but continue to see God’s providence for us that are full of abundance.
