Luke 20 – Authority

Section One V1-8 Being Questioned

We are all given authority on this earth, and as authority, we will face many issues. Luke 20 teaches us how to face these issues. Jesus was being questioned by the religious leaders. They were educated and highly respected people. But Jesus knew His authority was given by God, not by how good He performed. We cannot work hard to get the authority because without God we won’t be able to be in the position. When being questioned, Jesus did not speak a lot to explain Himself, instead He asked them questions back. We don’t always have to give answers to people. We are being in the position of authority does not mean we know more than others, but we should not be easily influenced by others but to stand firm in our position.

Section Two V9-19 Being Challenged

Jesus knew the chief priests and the scribes didn’t like Him, they were always finding ways to challenge Jesus and to find fault in Jesus. Therefore Jesus used the parable of the wicked vinedressers to teach them. They knew Jesus was talking about them and they were even more upset about Jesus. But Jesus did not worry about how they feel, instead He used the Word of God to answer instead of explaining for Himself. The religious leaders challenged Jesus because they were afraid of losing their own authority and respect from others, but Jesus was not afraid, because He knew all authority is from God. When we know our authority is from God and have a close relationship with Him, then we don’t need to be afraid, because God will support us all the way. In the same way, we should also trust that our authority is from God, so when we build a close relationship with our authority, trust in them, then God will make sure they support us too!

Section Three V20-40 Being Watched

Jesus was not in the doing mode, He was not just answering questions, but He was dealing with people’s hearts; He brought the truth into people’s lives. As authority, we should not be chased around by the people, but to help them to understand the truth so one day these people can also be in the position of an authority. The Great Commission from God is for us to make people God’s disciples, to train them and to help them understand the truth. Everyone can read the Bible, but we need to have an authority to lead us and to teach us in the right direction according to God’s Will. Then the Sadusees also came to test Jesus, not only Jesus responded about the kingdom of Caesar and the Kingdom of God; He also talked about the material world and the spiritual world. Jesus taught us to live on earth as it is in Heaven. So stop using people’s ways to deal with issues. The teaching of the Heavenly Kingdom is different to the teaching of the world and as an authority, we should live out the Heaven, so people can see the love of Jesus and the Glory of God in our lives.

Section Four V41-47 Facing the Genuine and the Sham

When we face genuine people and hypocritical people, we must have a firm foundation in God. Only through God we can receive the wisdom to differentiate the people. Jesus knew the scribes were not genuine, they wanted people to see them and to listen to them. Sometimes we care a lot about how people see us, our motivations base on if we are being recognised or not. We should also use the Word of God to help others to differentiate the genuine and the sham, do not lift up ourselves but to humble before God and before people, let people see God is with us. As an authority, what are we afraid of? Are we afraid of how people will see us? Or are we afraid of how much we will lose? Letting go of ourselves is not easy, but this is the secret in Heaven, in order for us to receive joy and peace from Heaven!

Prayer & Pursuit

Lord, thank You for showing us our fear, we are afraid of how others see us and we are afraid of losing. Lord, help us to see that our authority is from You, we don’t need to show people how good we are, but through Your Word we can stand firm. Lord, we may be facing challenges and issues from people, but by You, who gives us strength, we can do all things. Amen!
