Rev Daniel Xi An Poon
Jesus died and His body was put in the tomb. The women came to put on spices on Jesus’ body because they thought He was dead. At the beginning of this chapter, it shows us how people see the Lord. What is the meaning of His resurrection?
Section One V1-12 The Women and the Lord
The women did not see the Lord’s body and they were confused. Did they know about Jesus’ resurrection? Yes they did because Jesus told them about it before. Did Jesus’ Word bring us peace? The women knew about Jesus’ resurrection but they didn’t really believe in it. There was no peace in their heart until they saw Jesus.
Then after Jesus revealed to the women , they ran back to tell the disciples and the disciples also didn’t believe. Peter was the first one to run back and see, because he wanted to see with his eyes before he believed with his hearts. The disciples were hiding, they were scared and worried about what to do next. Whereas the women were willing to offer for the Lord, they went to the tomb before the sun came out. But the women could not remember what Jesus told them about His resurrection.
We also love the Lord and are willing to offer for the Lord like the women, but can we remember what He said and what He taught us in the past? Do we take the Words of the Lord to heart?
Section Two V13-32 The Two Disciples and the Lord
The disciples followed Jesus for three years, they knew Jesus was full of power and they heard about Jesus’ resurrection. But they didn’t recognise Jesus. They knew Jesus by knowledge, that He’s a prophet, someone full of power, someone brings hope, but they didn’t know He’s the Son of God, and the Lord of resurrection. The disciples were sad and confused, their eyes could not see clearly. So Jesus called them ignorant and foolish.
Do we also feel sad and worried when we follow Jesus? Is there many mini dramas in our hearts? We must continue to take communion and let our confused eyes open to see God. Use our heart to feel instead of our head. Is our heart full of passion when we hear the Word of God? Do not stay in the spirit of sleepiness and confusion.
Section Three V33-43 The Eleven Apostles and the Lord
The eleven disciples thought Jesus was the ghost, they were terrified and frightened. They were with Jesus day and night for three years, but they were still afraid. We thought we are mature Christians, we thought we know a lot about the Bible and about the Lord. But we are still afraid, God’s Word cannot stay inside our hearts.
The women forgot about the Lord’s Word, but when they remembered they believed; the disciples failed the recognise the Lord, but when they saw they believed; yet these apostles, even after they saw Jesus they could not believe He was alive, until Jesus started eating and drinking with them. What is our belief? Do we believe in everything in the Bible? Do we have a simple heart to follow?
Section Four V44-53 What the Lord has done in the Lives of the Apostles?
Jesus came to save us not to judge us. We are easily confused and only see the gifts, the gifts of prophecy, healing, casting out demons… the apostles did not understand the truth about the gifts. We tend to follow after these gifts instead of what’s more important, to understand the Word of God.
God’s promises are real, the Word and the Holy Spirit can help us to follow the path of God. We must long for the Holy Spirit, seek to be filled by the Holy Spirit, prepare ourselves, don’t stay in the spirit of confusion and sleepiness. God has a purpose for us, so stop living for ourselves, but for God.
Prayer & Pursuit
Lord, thank You for Your light, which is talking to us in the last chapter of Luke. Lord, You love us, You don’t want us to live in fear. Bless us Lord, to receive Your love and peace, like how You blessed the apostles. Let us come before You to rejoice and worship wholeheartedly! Amen.
