Section One V1-8 Just Like What He Told Us Before

V1 ‘Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.’ The spices were for putting on Jesus’ body before He was covered and wrapped. But when they arrived the tomb, they realised that the stone was rolled away, and they were amazed. V2-3 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”’ Why were they amazed? If they were determined to anoint Jesus with the spices, they why would they be amazed when they saw the stone not there? They wanted to anoint Jesus’ body, but at the same time they somehow knew there would be a stone, and Jesus would already be wrapped. A lot of time we wanted to do something for God, but at the same time we didn’t offer our 100% effort. We try to give ourselves excuses, but inside our hearts, we are unwilling.

V5-6 ‘And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.’ The young man was the angel, the messenger of God. Not only Jesus prophesied about His resurrection, but God also sent His messenger to reconfirm it.

V8 ‘So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.’ They were afraid, even though Jesus already told them that He would resurrect, and the angel also said the same thing to them, but they were still afraid. What are we afraid of inside our hearts? What is our fear, which blinds us from seeing the power of Jesus’ resurrection?

Section Two V9-13 Hear but Not Believe

V9 ‘Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.’ Mary had experienced a lot of miracles in the past, but when she saw Jesus’ tomb emptied, she was still afraid. But after that, Mary changed, and she went to tell Jesus’ disciples. V10-11 ‘She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.’ The disciples did not believe in Mary, they still had the mindset of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They thought of themselves as the chosen ones, that Jesus would appear before them, not Mary, so they did not believe what Mary said.

V12 ‘After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country.’ The disciples not only did not believe in Mary, but they also left and went into the country. They felt hurt and they were upset. We also have this stubborn mindset, we expect God to speak directly to us, not through anyone else.

Section Three V14-20 Life Comes with Teaching

V14 ‘Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.’ Jesus did not rebuke Mary when she did not believe in His resurrection, but He rebuked the disciples, who were called by Him, but they still did not believe due to their hardened hearts. Jesus has also called us, but do we really believe in Him? Do we believe the words spoken by His servants? Do we also have hardened heart? Jesus spoke the truth to His disciples; He continue to teach them and help them.

V15-18 ‘And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”’ Do not respond to our weakness and our old self, do not look back, and do not listen to the lies of the world. Jesus has given us the authority to teach and preach, He has given us the resurrected life, He is able, and we are able, if we believe!

V19-20 ‘So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.’ Jesus has already resurrected after three day, He has overcome, we have overcome with Him, if we believe.
