Rev Daniel Xi An Poon
Section One V1-6 Is He The Carpenter?
V1 ‘Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.’ Jesus did not forget His root, where He came from. Therefore when He became well known, He didn’t go around to promote Himself, but back to His own country to teach and preach.
V3-4 ‘Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.’ Jesus did not change Himself based on how people saw Him. He continued to teach and preach.
Section Two V7-29 Is He John the Baptist, the Prophet?
Jesus sent the disciples put two by two, give them missions to complete. Jesus did not send us to do whatever we want to do, but ti complete the visions and missions given by Him. Jesus wanted the disciples to experience what the Israelites experienced when they were in the wilderness, to learn to let go and let God lead. V12 ‘So they went out and preached that people should repent.’ It’s easier to heal the sick and cast out demons, because they are all ‘doing’, but what’s more important is to preach that people should repent. We cannot just help people solve the problems in front of them, but to build them up so they can overcome their own problems!
Section Three V30-52 Is He A Loving Father?
What is our attitude? We are often in a ‘doing’ mode, whatever you ask me to do, I’ll do it and tick the checklist. But this is not how we do the Word of God. When the disciples came back, they reported to Jesus, and Jesus took them to the deserted place to rest. V30-31 ‘Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.’ Jesus wants us to have an intimate relationship with us. There will always be something to do, the ministry is never ending, but more importantly we must have a relationship with God first!
It’s so easy to see the things we must do, but we cannot see our weakness and we let our ministry become our idols. God wants us to humble ourselves and rest our mind, so we can really spend time with Him.
V34 ‘And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.’ Jesus had compassion for them, He did not fulfil their needs straight away but to teach them many things. We will always have problems in our lives, but when our lives and built up in the Way of God, no matter what problems we are facing we will not be moved. Jesus knew what was more important for the people, so He gave them the teaching.
V35-36 ‘When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, this is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.’ They were the disciples, who just went out and experienced how God provided for them but immediately they forgot about it, instead they went back to the ‘doing’ mode, thinking what to do to feed the people.
V39-40 ‘Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties.‘ Jesus gave the authority to the disciples, to put people in groups and let them sit down. Today Jesus also gave us authority, to gather people to see Jesus. If people are willing to listen to us, they will also be able to hear the God we preach. We must be responsible to the people God gave us.
V45 ‘Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.’ Jesus did not want the disciples to be tempted and boasted about the power of feeding the multitude. He did not want the people to give the attention to people instead of God. He had the Father’s heart, concerning about the hearts of the disciples and followers.
Section Four V53-56 Is He The Healer?
V54-55 ‘And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was.’ This time the people recognised Jesus, they knew Him as a healer and a doctor, but Jesus brings more than just physical healing into our lives. He brings the Word of God.
Jesus called us to preach the Gospel and to disciple the nation. We must know Him first and have an intimate relationship with Him. Only by the Word of God, we can come out from the darkness and enter into the light. Who is Jesus? Do we really know Him?
