Ps Kathy Poon
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” (Ephesians 4:26-27)
“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” (Hebrews 12:15)
A. THE NATURE OF UNFORGIVENESS
1. Unforgiveness is a sin.
2. A foothold for the devil
Forgiveness Spiritual Principle No. 1: Choosing to be bitter and unforgiving EQUALS TO Choosing side with the devil and separate ourselves from the Grace of God.
B. THE CONSEQUENCES OF UNFORGIVENESS
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” (Hebrews 12:14-15)
1. We fall short of the Grace of God
2. We are being defiled by the root of bitterness, which affect our body, soul and interpersonal relationships
“Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.” (Proverbs 22:24-25)
C. WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?
It is not that we agree with what others did, but it is the breaking off of ungodly soul ties between us and the other party, and their negative influence on us.
It is not to say that the others are right, but it is letting God be the Judge.
It is not to say that we were not hurt or angry, but it is seeking God’s Healing so that we are not tormented by the hurtful feelings.
It is not that we avoid or try to forget completely; it is choosing to be the victor and not the victim.
It is not based on feeling, but on a decision we make
D. BLESSINGS OF FORGIVENESS
1. Be set free
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. (Luke 6:37)
The word, ‘forgiven’ in the original text was ‘set free’.
2. Let God be your Avenger
“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19)
3. Receive healing
“Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.” (Psalm 103:3)
Forgiveness Spiritual Principle No. 2: Choosing to forgive EQUALS TO Choosing to follow God, receive protection, grace, and blessings!
E THREE STEPS TO FORGIVENESS
1. Choose to forgive
“A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offence.” (Proverbs 19:11)
2. Prayer of confession
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
3. Fix your eyes on the cross
“When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.” (Luke 23:33-34)
