Proverbs 6 – Walk Out of Darkness

Rev Daniel Xi An Poon

Section One V1-5 Be Humble and Save Yourself

V1 ‘My son, if you become surety for your friend, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, you are snared by the words of your mouth; you are taken by the words of your mouth.’ We want to help people, but when we help them, do we make ourselves their god? When we speak too much, we lift up our own strength, and we think that we are helping them, but do we rob the glory of God? As followers of God, when people have problems, we want to help, we are willing to help, but our intention might become our pride. And this pride stops people to come to God, we cannot stop people coming to God and seeking the help of God. Everything we have is from God, whatever we can help others with is from God. We have to let people see the source of our strength, the origin of the fountain.

V3 ‘So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; for you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; plead with your friend.’ Do not let our lives be so busy to follow people’s needs, we cannot help everyone we want to help, and when we are unable to help others, then we will start to complain and we will start to question God. Therefore we must humble ourselves and admit that we cannot do everything by ourselves, with our own strength. Do we show people how much God loves them? Do we tell people how God send us to them to help them and to pray for them?

Section Two V6-11 To Be the Diligent Not the Sluggard

V6-8 ‘Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.’ The sluggard are those who do not fear God, the people who do not have God in their lives and the people who do not seek God. We think that we cannot see God in life and we cannot experience God, but this should not be an excuse, we are the followers of God, it’s not by emotions. We have seen the wonders of God, we have seen the miracles of God in our lives and in our families, then we must be diligent to do the work for God and to walk with God.

V9-11 ‘How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep—So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.’ Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, from today we must be diligent and not to be the sluggard. We never know what is going to happen, we don’t have much time because the end is near. It’s time to wake up and it’s time to stay awake.

Section Three V12-35 To Discern and Live in the Light

V12-14 ‘A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth; he winks with his eyes, he shuffles his feet, he points with his fingers; perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually, he sows discord.’ The wicked are the ungodly men, those who do not believe in God and those who refuse to see God. What does God hate? Those who see themselves higher than God. We must not follow them and not let them influence our lives.

V23 ‘For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life,’ The Word of God is our light of the path and the lamp to our feet. This is the path of life we must walk, then we can walk out of darkness and into the light. Because the light of God has come.
