Psalm 32 – New Beginning, New Blessing

Rev Daniel Xi An Poon

Section One V1-2 The True Blessing

It’s easy for us to remember the hard times, and it’s easy for us to count the gifts we received that we have been expecting. But in Psalm 32, it was David’s contemplation about what happened to him with Bathsheba. Was it entirely David’s fault when he slept with Bathsheba? If Bathsheba rejected David firmly maybe the situation would be different? Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, was faithful to his nation, he spent a long time outside fighting the war, and even when he was called back home, he refused to enjoy his life with his wife, because he was thinking of his brothers on the battlefield. He was a righteous man but maybe not so good a husband. Therefore, maybe, when David called for Bathsheba, she could not reject him.

V1 ‘Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.’ At the end of the year, we like to count blessings of the past year and look forward to the new blessings in the coming year. But very seldomly we repent our transgressions and ask for God’s forgiveness during this time. David knew he had sinned. In Psalm 51:1-2, he said, ‘Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.’ We don’t like to dig our past mistakes; we think that God is merciful so we can forget about our transgressions. But in here David reminded us that God’s blessing is for those, who admit their sins, repent before God and be forgiven.

There will not be just one thing we need to repent in our life. We are blessed sinners, we are always sinning, but God is always forgiving. But do we really recognise our sins and mistakes every single day? We expect God to do what we want it to happen, but all these things are our worldly desires. We don’t tend to give thanks when the things don’t happen in the way we want it to be. Through Psalm 32, God shows us through David that we are all sinners, and the biggest blessing in our life is for our sins to be forgiven, and for God to lead us to this big family.

V2 ‘Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit, there is no deceit.’ We don’t see that being forgiven is a blessing; it’s just like we don’t tend to give thanks after we are married, or after we have a job. Because we always think about our desires, what we do not yet to have, instead of seeing our problems in life. Everyone was born a sinner, no one is exceptional, and we should not hide. David honestly admitted his sins and weaknesses; what about us? We must also admit that we have hidden sinful desires, do not cover our sinful ‘being’ by out ‘doing’. David did many things for God, but he did not hide his sinful being. He decided to be honest in front of God with no deceit.

Section Two V3-7 Act in Time

V3-4 ‘When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah.’ It’s not natural for us to admit our mistakes. When we made a mistake, we have a tendency to let it past and if no one talked to us about it, we would not bring it up. But we are sinning every day; to sin is to not reach the target of God, and we can never be perfect as human beings. Therefore, it’s normal for us to sin, but do we see it and admit it? Do we come before God every day to repent our sins and ask Him for His forgiveness? God wants us to be honest before Him, He does not want to condemn us, but to set us free.

V5-6 ‘I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah. For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You in a time when You may be found; Surely in a flood of great waters they shall not come near him.’ If we don’t have any sin to repent, then the Holy Spirit will not prompt us to read His Word and allow our authority to share this message. Are we willing to admit that we are sinners?

V7 ‘You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.’ To admit our sins and mistakes are not ashamed; even though it is not the worldly practice, but because God wants us to be blessed, therefore, He wants us to learn to repent, then we can be blessed by Him. Sin separates us from God, He is full of blessings and abundance, but if we don’t repent our transgressions and repent our sins, then we cannot receive blessings. Those who have ears must hear! We must act now!

Section Three V8-11 God Will Bless

V8 ‘I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.’ In 2022, God wants us to enter abundance and He will guide us with His eyes. God wants us to pass our life lessons, He keeps His eyes on us because He wants us to receive His blessings, not to condemn us or judge us. Do not think that our God or our authority is here to prosecute us or to harm us; on the contrary, they want the best of us.

V9 ‘Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you.’ The horse and the mule are harnessed so they will not walk astray.

V10 ‘Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; but he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.’

V11 ‘Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, You righteous; and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!’
