Renewed Spirit – Desired to be filled by the Holy Spirit

Sunday, 20th June 2021

Pastor Kathy Poon

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

We thought as Christians, we can do everything through the strength God gives to us. But what is the strength God gives to us? A lot of time, after we have became Christians for a while, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years… we will feel tired and gradually we will pray less and seek God less. How can we continue on this path of faith? God already told us in the Book of Acts that He will give us the Holy Spirit, which is the power for us to do all things. Our mind is either filled with the world or with the Holy Spirit. If we don’t seek the Holy Spirit and let it fill our lives, then the spirits of the world will fill our lives.

Whatever we desire in the material world, God will give it to us in the spiritual world. Therefore in order for us to receive the Holy Spirit, we need to first seek it with our physical body.

  • Material: Desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit
  • Spiritual: Be filled with the Holy Spirit

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—  the Spirit of truth (John 14:16)

If we want to know the Holy Spirit, we need to first understand the Concept of Trinity. God is the Father, Jesus is the Son, and Holy Spirit is the Helper God sent for us. It’s just like how water can be solid, liquid and air. In the same way, Sun can be a body of sun, it can be heat and it can be light. If we want to enter into the blessed life, then we must have the Holy Spirit.

I. Overcome the flesh – Ephesians 5:15-18

1) A person has spirit, soul, and body

  • Before believing in Jesus: The spirit is very weak; the soul is very big; the body is very big;
  • After believing in Jesus: The spirit is awakened; the body is disciplined; the emotions are managed

What’s the purpose of our lives? Are we living a life fulfilling the destiny God has given to us? For a lot of people, living is to get a job, to get married, to have children, to buy a house… then what’s next? When Holy Spirit lives within us, we will know the purposes of our lives and we will no longer live for the sake of living.

2) Being filled with the Holy Spirit, one can win the victory

  • Fools to wise
  • Unwise to Understand the will of the Lord
  • Drunk with wine to Redeeming the time

II. Receive Power – Acts 10:38

When we know God is with us, then we have the power to heal and to cast out the darkness of our lives. There are a lot of sins and darkness in our lives, and when we are filled by the Holy Spirit, the sins and darkness will slowly be filtered out. But there are still so much sins in our lives and therefore we need the Holy Spirit to continue fill us up until we are completely clean in our body, soul and spirit. There are Christians, who don’t live a life filled with the Holy Spirit, and when people see them, they would not want to come close to them. On the other hand, when we are filled by the Holy Spirit everyday, when people see us, they will want to draw closer to us and to know the God we follow.

III. Understand the Truth – John 16:13

We are usually performance-oriented, we don’t look at the process but the end result. We see what we are lacking instead of what we have. But it’s never about how well we do or perform, but if our relationship with people and with God has improved through the process. Holy Spirit comes to help us understand the truth, and in different situations we will know how to use the truth.

IIII. Bear the Fruit of the Holy Spirit – Galatians 5:22-23

I. Physically

We would see many physical manifestation when people are filled with the Holy Spirit, including shed tears, smile, become hot, fall down… When we know these are some manifestation when we are filled by the Holy Spirit, we will be more opened to receive the Holy Spirit and not to be afraid for the physical manifestations. Because our rationality often limits us to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

II. Spiritual breakthrough – 1 Corinthians 14:14-15

Speak in tongues is also the manifestation of being filled by the Holy Spirit. There are two kinds of prayers: Praying with the spirit and praying with the understanding. When we pray in the spirit, we are praying in tongues, and when we pray in tongues, we are edifying ourselves, and training our soul to be stronger.

“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.  What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” (I Corinthians 14:14-15)

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13)

How to be continuously filled with the Holy Spirit?

  1. Recognise your spiritual condition
  2. Being hungry and thirsty for God
  3. Deny your old-self

How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?

  1. Practise speaking in tongues
  2. Use your gifts
  3. Soak into the worship (receive to be filled with the Holy Spirit)
  4. Read the word of God
