Renewing Strength

Sunday, 10th August 2014

Rev Daniel Poon

This week we read about Matthew 11:25-27, At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.  Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

As we can see, Jesus always tries his best to teach people and ask them to turn back from their evil desires, but not everyone listens. After all, it is hard to believe before seeing anything happened. Rev Daniel shared the story of the Malaysian Bamboo, which shoots out from the ground after five years of planting, and become great big bamboo forest. If we don’t have patience to wait, we will fail to see God’s promises in our lives come to past. Rev Daniel shared with us two points to help us to gain the strength to wait upon God:

  1. By Direct Prayer“At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth” (Matthew 11:25a). Even though nobody listened to Jesus and no one believed in Him, He choose to “praise God”, in showing His faith and recognition of the Creator. Also, Jesus never gives up; He fights back not by physical strength, but by proclaiming God’s Words and Promises.
  2. By Obedience to God’s Will Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do” (Matthew 11:25a). Jesus gave us the best example of obeying God and following God’s Will instead of His own, even if He’s the Son of God; therefore we should always seek God’s Will before ours, and when we made a mistake, we should not be afraid to repent and know that God is willing to help those who earnestly seek Him.

It says in Matthew 11:29, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” We all need rest, but we should rest in God instead of putting our trust in this materialised world. Learn from Jesus, obey God’s Will, and we will one day see how much great things God will do in our lives!
