Section One V1-6 Must Have Unity

What is the Culture of Jesus Christ? It is the Kingdom Culture, which is the Truth of God. We have been talking a lot recently about the ones being called, we are called and chosen not by our own good deeds, we should not boast about ourselves, but only Jesus Christ. When we stop boasting about ourselves, then the fragrance of the Tree of Life will be in our lives naturally.

V1-2 ‘We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbour for his good, leading to edification.’ God has given us strength and power; therefore, we should take the responsibility to support others. God wants us to not only think of ourselves, but to support one another. When we support others, we are not to please ourselves, we love people not to ask anything for return, but to fulfil God’s purpose in our lives. When we help others, we should help with a humble and willing heart, to let the people we help to receive true joy from God.

V3 ‘For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.”’ Jesus set a good example for us, He did not come to the world to please people, but to give us an eternal life by dying for us. We like to be problem-solvers, we thought helping people is to do something for them, but if we don’t help them with the standards of God and the ways of God, then we can never benefit their lives. If we only help others in a ‘doing’ mode, and do not bring the Word of God into their lives, then there will always be new problems emerging in their lives and we can never help them completely.

We tend to help others by doing something, which make them happy, but when we become their god, they will not experience God, then they will always look for us to solve their problems. At the end we are tired and bitter, and the people we help cannot experience God. Our church has the most high-tech sound system in the nation, and we have the support of very well-skilled people, but it’s not because of how good we are, it’s because of God’s grace. We must have unity in God, not for our own benefit, but for the benefit of one another and for the church of God. Before we seek to have unity with others, we must first to have unity with God, to know God’s heart and guidance, to pray and to have an intimate relationship with God.

We should not use the way the world worshipping idols to try to control God. Praying to God is not to list out the things we want to achieve and ask God to fulfil it, instead, we should seek to build up a closer relationship with God through prayer and get to know Him more. It’s the same in a family, do we seek the benefit of our spouse and children? We tend to complain about how our family does not support us, instead of giving thanks for how they have walked alongside us all this time. Getting married is not about ticking off the checklist, how can a marriage relationship last? We are all sinners and there is no perfect marriage, but if we learn how to have unity with God then we can learn how to have unity in our marriage.

Love and trust should be the foundation of a marriage, not in a ‘doing’ mode, but with a willing heart. When we learn to love and trust in God first, then we can have love and trust in the marriage.

Section Two V7-13 Must Accept the Weakness of Others

We must have unity and we also must accept others without judgement. God makes everyone different, but He has His perfect plan for each one of us. Therefore, having unity is also about accepting the strengths and weaknesses of others, without finding fault or making judgement.

Section Three V17-21 Must Follow God

The Culture of Jesus is to let God’s Will be done, not our own will. When we understand it’s never about how much we can do, because we are all made righteous by grace, then we will be the true follower of God. Be willing to offer ourselves, to love the unlovable, to let go of the things we hold onto in the world, then we can start living in the Culture of Jesus!
