Section One V1-6 Wave Goodbye to the Past
V1 ‘Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?’ The Word of God is for those living on this world, and we will no longer need the Word of God when we die. God’s Word is powerful, it creates the Heaven and earth. When we receive the new life, we will wave goodbye to our past, because we know every day we will experience God, and every day we need the Word of God.
V4 ‘Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.’ When we wave goodbye to our past, we will have a new mission in our lives – to bear fruits – not by the ‘doing’ mode, but to live under the fragrance of the Tree of Life.
V5-6 ‘For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.’ It’s important to wave goodbye to our past, because when we receive a new life, the past cannot influence us anymore, unless we let it come to take over again. We tend to think that ‘I was like this, and I was like that’ or ‘this is my personality’, but we should not let anything come in the way of living out the imagine of God. There is nothing impossible in God, and there is nothing that can bind us, apart from ourselves.
Section Two V7-12 Understand the Root
V7 ‘What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”’ God wants us to know His Goodness, but can we hear His Word? God gave Adam and Eve everything in the Garden of Eden apart from the fruits of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God’s intention was good for Adam and Eve, He gave them every good thing in the Garden of Eden, and He also gave them the freedom to choose. But Adam only saw the pile of work he had to do, and Eve only saw the one tree that they could not have.
We are also like this, we only see the things we can’t have and the work that we have to do, instead of all the good things we have in our lives. The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was meant to be a good tree until the snake lured Adam and Eve to sin. The law is meant to be good for us, but somehow the intention of the law has been twisted by the sin of people. God’s creations are meant for our own good, but because of us being rebellious and disobedient, the world becomes the place of temptation and destruction of our lives.
V12 ‘Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.’ God gave us the law for our good, the law itself is holy, but we must understand its root. Do not follow blindly, but always go back to the root, to see God’s love in His creations, and to see His good will in giving us the law.
Section Three V13-25 Admit our Weaknesses
V13-14 ‘Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.’ Our flesh desire will always give us excuses to give in to sins and to give up on doing good, therefore Paul says here that we must put our flesh to death and train ourselves to fight against the flesh.
V18 ‘For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.’ When we know our weaknesses, we don’t just stop there, but to receive victory by fully relying on God. Too often we know our weaknesses and we admit them, but we cannot carry out the actions to overcome them. We must start from ourselves, by relying on God and walking out from our comfort zone. It’s like doing the exercise, to build up our bones and muscles, to become strong inside out, not in a ‘doing’ mode, but to really know the reasons behind it. Because God wants us to receive victory in Him!
