Section One V1-11 Be Set Free
Do we know what our identity is? Jesus knew very well who He is, He knows He is the Son of God, and He has been reminding others about His identity. So do we also know our identity? Because when we do, everything we do will be different. Yes, we are Christians, and we are the children of God, but more importantly, we must know that we are the ones being called. V1-2 ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.’ Paul told us that we the one being called, we will not be condemned because the Holy Spirit has set us free from the law of sin and death. This again implies that when we die together with Jesus in baptism, our old self is also put to death.
What is the meaning of our baptism? It’s not just a ceremony, but a turning point of our lives, from death to life, from old to new; the baptism is so powerful that our past cannot haunt us anymore, because we can declare freedom from the law of sin and death! We are being called to be set free, to receive joy and peace, to put our past behind and to live a new life. This is era full of fear, with the Pandemic, we are afraid of many things; as the one being called, we live in the same era, but we won’t have to fear anymore, the Holy Spirit has set us free in Jesus Christ.
V7-8 ‘Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.’ Our church believe the Holy Spirit is equally important as the Word of God. We cannot do anything by our flesh, but only by the Holy Spirit and because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, then we can come before God and please Him. V9 ‘But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.’ These were the words spoken to the Christians in Rome, those who were being called. Today, these words are spoken to us, those who don’t belong to the flesh but the Holy Spirit.
V10-11 ‘And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.’ We do not belong to the body anymore; our flesh desires can no longer lure us into sinning against God. After baptism, our old self is put to death, so we can train our body to reject the sinful earthly desires. Spend time to train our body and our mind to be more like Jesus, let the Word of God and the Holy Spirit come into our lives every day. Then we can live out the new life, staying away from sin and drawing closer to God.
Section Two V12-17 Be the Children of God
V12-14 ‘Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.’ We are the ones being called and we can tell our flesh what to do, not the other way round. Our flesh will be led by the Holy Spirit, and we will be the children of God. The salvation of Jesus Christ is real, and we must value the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
V15-17 ‘For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.’ After we are baptised, we must learn how to live this new life, otherwise we won’t be able to live out the resurrected lives. We become the children of God, no orphans of the world anymore. Do we believe in it? Do we believe that we have a family in Christ?
As the one being called, we will not focus on our past pain and hurt anymore, but the eternal life. Because we know the earth is not our destination at the end of life, our eternal home is in heaven, therefore we can look lightly the suffering in life, and live joyfully every day, in preparation to the eternality.
Section Three V18-39 Receive Glory
V18-19 ‘For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.’ We are the ones being called, suffering and hardship of the world should not be a burden us, we can receive glory on the earth as well as in Heaven, but first we must live it out. When we have the right attitude, believe and respect in our identity as the one being called, then we can easily live it out. The way we live will also be evident to others. This is not ‘doing’ but ‘being’, from our hearts, from our mind and from our attitude.
V24-25 ‘For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.’ What do we hope for? What we hope for must also be what we believe in. God wants us to receive glory with Him, do not believe in the lies of the world. The World wants to put us down, but God will lift us up. V28 ‘And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.’ No matter if people can see us or not, we need to remember that we are the ones being called, and we are glorified in God. Everything God does is for our own good, let us see God’s Work in our everyday lives!
V31 ‘What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?’ What are we afraid of? God has already prepared everything for us, so what should we be afraid of? Everything has the Will of God, and when God’s Will is revealed, nothing can stop us following Him. What are stopping us experiencing God? Nothing! V37-39 ‘Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ We are the ones being called and we are to receive glory together with God! This we must believe!
