Rev. Daniel Poon
“14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” – 1 John 5:14-15
This morning Rev Daniel used this above scripture to teach us that we may not receive what we ask of God every time we pray, but when we ask according to His will, it will be given to us. This may sound impossible, so how can we experience this blessing in our life? The answer lies in Mark 10:15 – to return “like a little child” and John 3:3 – to be “born again” – it is not asking us to become like a child or go back to our mother’s womb physically, but to have the faith in our Lord just like a little child trusting his father, and believe that in Christ everything is possible.
Rev Daniel further pointed out that to receive this blessing of eternal life, we may face three major challenges:
- To admit that I know nothing – all the knowledge we gain from this world is worth nothing compared to what God wants us to know. We need to follow what the inner man – our heart – tells us to do.
- To admit that I should not rely on the past – what we learn from our past experience should not direct our life because we live in the present. We should open our heart so that we can embrace God’s presence and receive His blessings today.
- To admit that what I thought was right might be wrong – we should not label other people even when they might have done something wrong to us, but should have faith in God that He is working and He can change people.
However, if we are willing to humble ourselves and take these challenges, our God, who longs to work in partnership with His children, will surely help us to overcome them.
