The Children of Light

Sunday, 29th May 2022

Pastor Maosong Chang (Guest Speaker)

Matthew 6:23 says, ‘But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!’ When our inside is brightened, the outside will also be brightened. Therefore we must have a heart of light, and first our hearts must be cleansed and holy.

1. Have the Heart of Light

II Timothy 3:2 also says, ‘For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.’ We must live a holy and godly life, do not let the earthly desires overtake out hearts. We can have wealth, but we need to use our wealth wisely. God gives us talents, skills, resources, wealth, so we can fulfil the purpose He has given to us.

The Heart of Cleanness

It’s easy for us to follow the earthly gains, to develop jealousy, bitterness, unforgiveness, greed… Job 11:13-15 says, ‘If you would prepare your heart, and stretch out your hands toward Him; if iniquity were in your hand, and you put it far away, and would not let wickedness dwell in your tents; then surely you could lift up your face without spot; yes, you could be steadfast, and not fear.’ If we really follow God and keep a heart of righteousness, we don’t need to prove ourselves, the light will come out from us naturally.

I Timothy 6:5 also says, ‘useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.’ Without a heart of cleanness, we can never fully become the children of the light.

The Heart of Kindness

What is kindness? To see the good in everyone, and to give people opportunity even when they make mistakes. Do we have this heart of kindness? To be willing to offer, to give way to others, to walk an extra mile for the good… God knows our hearts and God sees through our hearts, even if no one else sees it. Mordecai had the heart of kindness and adopted Esther, who became the Queen of Persia; Boaz had the heart of kindness and married Ruth, who gave birth to the grandfather of King David; when we give kindness to others, we will also be treated with kindness.

2. Walk the Way of Light

We are the children of light, we must walk in the way of light, do not lie and do not do things under the table. This world is full of darkness, therefore we must become the light of the world for people to see and to follow. Our way will be brighter and more glorious.

3. Bear the Fruits of Light

Ephesians 5:8-12 says, ‘For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.’ To be the children of light, we must bear fruits, it’s not just about proclaiming it but to really act it out.

Luke 1:78-79 says, ‘Through the tender mercy of our God, with which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; to give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.’ God will lead us to the path of light and path of glory. Joseph was a slave, but he was a child of light, and even when he was put to jail, he continued to act in the light. Therefore God led him to the path of light. King David also walked in the light most of his life, even though he made some mistakes along the way, but at the end, he was willing to walk in the light and pursued righteousness, God blessed him and his children greatly.

Let us be the children of light and walk in the light of God always!
